Yakitori is a traditional Japanese dish that is served on bamboo skewers much like a kabob. The Japanese word "Yakitori" literally translates out to "grilled bird" in English. It is made up of bite sized chunks of chicken that have been basted in a Yakitori sauce and grilled over hot charcoal. Yakitori sauce gives the chicken a delicious caramel color with a slightly crispy sweet & salty flavor much like that of a teriyaki sauce. Yakitori sauce, "Yakitori no tare" in Japanese, is usually made with sake (rice wine), soy sauce, mirin (sweet rice vinegar), and sugar. Although Yakitori sauce is usually used for basting, it also makes a wonderful marinade and a tasty dipping sauce. |
