Banana sauce is commonly known as banana ketchup. It was invented in WWII during a heavy tomato shortage, so bananas were used instead. This resulted in a sweeter condiment that became immediately popular with Philipine style cuisine. Because the sauce was so popular, it became a main ingredient in several popular dishes, and so other varieties of the sauce became available, such as the hot banana sauce. This allowed it to work for a wider variety of traditional dishes, as the sauce grew further from the idea of ketchup, and became its own, unique Filipino condiment. |
