At one time you could order a case of a one of the flavors of this particular brand of noodle on a well known sells about everything site and get free shipping. That is not longer the situation, and the shipping makes ordering them horribly prohbitive. After looking around I once again found that AFG has the best price on this product. The noodles are very fresh tasting and soft, and the various flavor packets do have very rich intense flavor, even if you just use half the packet if you are concerned about salt consumption. Since the noodles are not fried like ramen often are, they are also lower calorie so this brand of Udon noodles are pefect for those who are looking for something with the ease of ramen but not all food qualities that some people worry about!
Add a few vegetables or some leftover chicken, shrimp, steak bits...whatever you may have and you have a very tasty meal. (hint: a fresh egg cracked into a steaming bowl just before serving makes the broth incredibly rich and thick!)With the addition of just a little bit of veggies or meat, or even just that egg, this can easily be a meal. I've often split a packet with someone and made a meal of it with a half sandwich and few pickles on the side. It is very filling!
Like the shrimp flavor, the crab is a nice mild broth, it is not overly fishy but does have a crab flavor to it. I like getting "crab delights" (crab flavored surimi) at the store and adding it to this dish with some veggies. If you simmer the surimi in the broth a bit before adding the noodles it develops a wonderful flavor, you feel like you are eating someing very pricy and decadent!
