Spam Musubi

In Hawaii, spam is all the rage. Its practically in everything. So, if you love sushi and spam, try this new and innovative recipe that will blow your socks off. The salty taste of the spam and the seafood taste of the sushi nori mix very well.


  • 12 oz Fully Cooked Lunch Meat "Spam"
  • 6 tbsp Rice Vinegar
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce
  • 1/4 cup White Sugar (add more sugar for sweeter taste)
  • 5 shet Sushi Nori Seaweed
  • 2 cups Short Grain Sushi Rice
  • Musubi Maker (Optional)


  • 1. Cook rice, when done, place rice in a large bowl. Fold in rice vinegar while fanning (or place in front of an electric fan) to cool. Set aside
  • 2. Slice spam meat into 8-10 even pieces, about 1/4 inch thick each
  • 3. Mix soy sauce and sugar in a bowl, set aside
  • 4. Preheat a frying pan on med-high then place in spam meat and fry for 1-2 minutes per side or until lightly brown
  • 5. Once both sides are brown, pour the soy/sugar mixture over the meat and fry until the sugar begins to caramelize. When done, set aside
  • 6. Cut nori sheet in half and lay a flat work surface
  • 7. Place a rice press in the ceter of the sheet, and press rice tightly inside
  • 8. Top with a think layer of furiakake and a slice of spam meat (a second layer of rice can be added if desired.) remove press
  • 9. Wrap nori around molded rice, sealing edges witha a small amount of water
  • 10. (Rice may also be formed by using the meat container or by hand in the shape of the meat slices, 1 inch thick)
